TALKING ABOUT THE ARTS ALSO MEANS TALKING ABOUT THE MARGINS

Stimulating the arts and encouraging participation and discussion in a non-urban environment involves dialogue between very diverse sectors, a process of constant reinvention and reaffirmation.

Talking about the arts also involves talking about the margins, and therefore about an attempt at decentralisation. Working from this geographical periphery is at once both difficult and gratifying.

After over ten years following the research and shared experiences of the project L’animal a l’esquena, set in a location where rural tasks go hand in hand with creation, we have taken the initiative of setting up the association ALÈ, Friends of L’animal a l’esquena.

The aim of this association is to gather together a broad group of people who share a desire to support the ideas that have driven the activities of L’animal a l’esquena over many years.

ALÈ hopes to create a support group that encourages discussion of new ways of taking the project forward, made up of people who, through their expertise or economic contribution, can help L’animal a l’esquena continue to provide a refuge for experiment and creation, as well as a centre of resistance.

The driving force behind this initiative is a desire to defend what we love, artistic creation and work with the body as tools of critical thought and reflection on the world around us. Given the difficulties facing projects such as L’animal a l’esquena, and their vulnerability, we have decided to set up ALÈ to begin on new paths towards possible pastures new.

ALÈ would like to find new tools with which to support the activities of L’animal a l’esquena, to encourage creation and research in contemporary performance arts, especially where it may shed new light on the new languages of the body and their fusion with other artistic languages such as music, literature, visual art and new technologies.
