Marta Izquierdo
( Marta Izquierdo )

Marta Izquierdo, who has worked with L’animal a l’esquena as an associate artist since 2011, returns to L’animal to begin researching material for her new project Carnaval. This new anthropological approach to popular culture, brought to the contemporary stage, will come in two formats: one purely for the stage, Touloulou, the other for outdoor or non-theatre spaces, CRE/IATURES - IZAKIAK.
Marta Izquierdo will spend two weeks in different spaces at L’animal to work on research and writing and begin to look for elements of the choreography.

CRE/IATURES-IZAKIAK is a cross-border, immersive choreographic project around the figure of the savage in the carnivals of the Pyrennees. She will work with an artistic team made up of young artists, going from one end of the border to the other to look at the figure of the savage in the local carnavals. From Spain to France, Catalonia to the Basque Country, passing through the Eastern Pyrennees, Andora, Béarn, Aragon and Navarre.

TOULOULOU. After a triptych dedicated to female communities and after a series of projects on roller-skates, Marta Izquierdo begins a new cycle, Carnaval & Cabaré (Carnival & Cabaret) with this project devoted to a powerful female figure of gala and masked balls. Based on the carnivals of French Guyana, her starting point is the character of Touloulou, who, under her disguise, remains anonymous during the three months of carnival.
“During this carnival time, it is the women, more often subjected to abuses of authority, harrassment and violence (…), who decide who dances and who twiddles their thumbs all night. Lasciviously or prudently. The chosen gentleman can only stumble into the trap.” (C. Taubira)
This is a choreographic piece in collaboration with the African choreographer Muriel Melrin Vidil.
