Antonio Moreno
Is an eclectic, versatile musician influenced by the cultural tradition of his native city, Utrera, a landmark for both historical and contemporary flamenco. He has created a new concept of performance, fusing the tradition of this art with a solid academic training in European music.
With a degree from the Higher Conservatory of Music in Seville, he began his professional life as a member of the Youth Orchestra of Andalucía and Mediterranean Youth. He was guided by such prestigious figures in the world of percussion and flamenco as: Jean Geoffoy, Gilles Midoux, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, William Moerch, Gerardo J. Núñez and Chano Domínguez. He worked with and took part in shows with the French ensemble Vox Nova, as well as Ensamble XXXXI, Claude Delangle, J. Geoffroy, Butch Morrichs (jazz), and the flamenco singers Fernando Terremoto, Juan José Amador, Rafael de Utrera, Tomás de Perrate, David Lagos and Rocío Márquez.
In 1999 he set up the Lorca Project with the saxophonist Juan M Jiménez, hatching experimental research projects on which Pedro G Romero (plastic artist and cross-disciplinary artistic director) was a keen collaborator and which became the precursors of a new concept of contemporary flamenco performance.
He is currently continuing his work as Lecturer in Percussion at the Higher Conservatory of Music in Badajoz and earned a doctorate (with honours) from the University of Seville for his thesis on “Flamenco Percussion: models for musicological interpretation and analysis”.
He gives advanced and master classes at the University of Seville, the “Musikene” Higher Conservatory of Music, and conservatories in Toulouse, Clemont-Ferrand and Paris.
In a piece he designed with the singer-songwriter Juan José Amador in Badajoz, he suggested a marimba accompaniment to the cante and from this came his appearance at the 2010 Flamenco Biennale performing the piece A Contratiempo with the guitarrist Paco Escobar.
In 2015 he premiered his first piece as a soloist, entitled Al Golpe. This was performed with great success at the Seville Flamenco Biennale. He has performed work by such major composers as Alain Bancquart, Robert Pascal, Mauricio Sotelo, Daniel Sprintz, Bernd Asmus, Novel Samano, Franc Yeznikian, and José Ignacio de la Peña. He has also worked on many records, such as an Anthology of Songs from Extramadura with the Renaissance music group Albayalde, with the Ensamble XX-XX, with the guitarist Paco Escobar and on Flamenco y Universidad (Vol IX).
He has been a member of the dancer Israel Galván’s company since 2005, and toured major music and dance festivals all over the world with the pieces Arena, El final de este estado de cosas, redux, Lo Real and Fla-co-men.
He won the Filón Prize for Best Flamenco Instrumentalist at the LIV International Cante Competition in Las Minas.
